ARMADILLO 21st Anniversary: Journey North into Autumn | Altay Crossing (Part Four)

news2026-10-16 16:09:30

Some places are meant to be “arrived at”; some are meant to be “sunk into.” Kanas is the latter.

In autumn, Kanas has washed away all finery, revealing the calm and ease that years should bring. The water turns unassuming and clear; the mountains, too, gain layered expressions. Trees in pleasing disarray stand in orderly ranks, and different color families form different vocal parts, each singing its heart out.

We deliberately kept this day’s itinerary slow, strolling along the lakeside boardwalk and listening to the autumn wind sweep through the sea of forest. All the jolts along the road are gently caught, in this moment, by this autumn color.

A good journey is half magnificent mountains and rivers, half the serendipity of meeting. On this 21st-anniversary northbound journey, among tonight’s traveling group, we will welcome the second birthday celebrant. It is also deep autumn, also far from the city, but this time we do not entrust it to silence; we entrust it to sound. By day, Kanas taught us quiet: the mountains do not speak, the water does not explain. At night, we specially invited a band and moved the party out into the wilderness, pouring songs and the sounds of dancing footsteps, without pretense, into the valley.

When a landscape is treated with such earnestness by people, it is no longer just a landscape; it becomes a coordinate of memory. Whenever Kanas is mentioned, the burning warmth of people meeting will return as promised.
